How to Open a Laptop Battery & Replace the Lithium Ion

Laptop batteries, like all rechargeable battery packs, lose their charging capacity over time. Because new laptop batteries are expensive, replacing the individual cells inside the battery casing can save a lot of money. However, rebuilding a battery sometimes does not work as expected, so it’s important to be willing to purchase a new laptop battery if the procedure fails.

1. Allow the laptop battery to run down completely. Turn off your laptop, then remove the battery. Write down the model number located on your Latitude D800 battery to help identify the type of Li-ion replacement cells you need to purchase.

2. Split open a small section of the Latitude D800 battery pack (at the seam) with a screwdriver or craft knife. Continue to pry the plastic case loose moving around the outer edge until the entire top is free. This may take a bit of force.

3. Note the number of cells inside the case (usually four to eight). Write down the part number and voltage information printed on the Toshiba PA3107U-1BRS cell casings. Draw a diagram showing the arrangement of the cells and how they are connected, or take a few photos to help with reassembly.

4. Purchase the correct number and type replacement batteries from a local or online dealer, based on your battery model and cell specifications. Six Li-ion cells typically cost around $30 to $40.

5. Carefully remove each cell using a craft knife and wire cutters as necessary. Each Toshiba PA2487U battery pack is different, but the cells are usually wrapped in a plastic casing with metal contacts attached to one end. Lay the metal contacts, wires and casing material aside.

6. Use double-sided tape or a solder gun (only if necessary) to attach the metal contacts to the cells and circuit board. When finished, the old cells should be completely stripped (naked) and the new cells should look like the old ones as much as possible.

Linux, power management and laptop battery life

Ever since I’ve got new laptop last November, I was quite unhappy with its battery life. Initially it used to keep computer running for around 2.5 hours with usual workload (mail/www/docs), while Dell advertised up to 5 hours of work with that particular 6-cell battery model. After some time battery lost ~40% of its original capacity without any particular reason, and could hardly manage to get 1.5 hours of work away from AC adapter. Fortunately, Dell’s technical support arranged battery replacement. But new battery’s performance wasn’t much better (2-2.5 hours), so I’ve managed to get… another replacement. :) This time I’ve decided to investigate in details what is actually standing behind laptop’s battery life.

I’ve been investigating topic of power management and laptop battery life for around 3-4 weeks, running also detailed battery tests with total of two laptops and three batteries. I found out a few interesting conclusions, so hopefully this article would be helpful for some of you.

Power management useful tools

Gnome Power Manager

This tool itself is not much interesting in terms of power managing, actually. However, it has pretty nice statistic features and displays detailed battery information, which could tell a lot about your battery, and maybe even explain problems causing its poor performance.

One of the most important things here is Capacity. It tells how much your battery’s capacity is degraded. In my case, original capacity of battery is 56.6W(atts), while last full charge was 54.7W, which is ~96% of designed capacity. Basically, less capacity discount laptop battery means worse performance. Another interesting bits, are Charge rates, which are telling how much power is your computer consuming at the moment. Less is better, obviously. History of power consumption is nicely presented in Power History tab.

It’s quite clear now that getting to know better with GPM is very helpful in determining possible problems with power management on your machine.

Laptop Mode

Let me use an introduction from Laptop Mode homepage:

Laptop Mode Tools is a laptop power saving package for Linux systems. It allows you to extend the battery life of your laptop, in several ways. It is the primary way to enable the Laptop Mode feature of the Linux kernel, which lets your hard drive spin down. In addition, it allows you to tweak a number of other power-related settings using a simple configuration file.

Basically, Laptop Mode is designed to manage HDD power (and also do some other stuff), while system is running on Dell laptop battery power. Hard disks are usually computer’s one of the most power-hungry devices, so spinning it down while it’s not actually needed, would probably have pretty much impact on battery’s better performance. Laptop Mode installation is pretty straightforward, especially withRPM packages>. Configuring LM is also simple, as its configuration file located in /etc/laptop_mode/laptop_mode.conf is full of instructions and tips, which makes whole configuration a lot easier. I’d also recommend to have a look into pretty extensive FAQ, which covers most common problems.

Before configuring LM you need to be ready for some experiments. Various hard drives have various features which may, or may not be totally compatible with LM’s features. Basically, it would probably take a few tries before a ‘perfect set’ is found. However, LM takes care not only about hard drives - it also allow to control CPU frequencies and governors, or laptop (PA2487U PA3107U-1BRS)’s screen - to put it in other words: LM is quite useful set of tools, helping to get most of power management on your Linux system.

Things affecting battery life

Before you start complaining about disgraceful battery life in your laptop, think about things which could eat the most of battery power. By ‘things’ I mean computer’s built-in devices and features. Let’s see:

Screen backlight

Keep it dimmed as much as possible, and turn it down (i.e. close a lid) while you’re away. It really eats a lot of power.

Wireless devices

WiFi adapters, Bluetooth dongles, built-in mobile/cellular cards. Switch all of those off, if you don’t need it. You will feel the difference. Guaranteed.

CPU, hard drive

You cannot switch CPU or HDD totally off, but you can set CPU to lock frequency at minimum level while running on battery power. I was really surprised to see how high power consumption jumps up while CPU is running at full speed. HDD could also go to sleep while not needed. Did I mention Laptop Mode tools to check 40Y6795 40Y6797 40Y6799?

Dedicated video adapter

Having fancy nVidia or ATI dedicated video adapters, instead of cheap onboard ones, might be cool (especially with desktop-effects to show off), but bear in mind these are extra devices with GPUs, which also like to eat a lot of protons and electrons…

Externals

All external USB/Firewire/PC Card/etc. devices are also taking significant part in raising demand for power. If you like to keep external memory card reader or hard disk connected via USB 24/7, maybe it’s good time to stop liking that idea?

Internals

Enter BIOS and go through each screen, switching off all internal devices which you don’t need. These might be something like internal modem, IR port, serial/parallel ports, etc. You can be seriously surprised how all these things are adding up in total power consumption. I was, at least.

Software

Compiling kernel while computer’s running on battery, would not help save the most of it. Same with watching films, playing games, etc. Not touching computer at all would be probably the best idea. ;)

Battery testing results

As I mentioned at the beginning, I’ve been running several battery tests for a few weeks, using two different laptops. Tests were basically based on some certain conditions, while which I have been manually measuring and comparing time with percentage of battery level.

Machine: Dell Latitude D620 battery

Battery: 6-cell ‘old’ (before 2nd replacement) - designed capacity: 56W; current capacity: ~88%

This battery was giving me really poor performance and actually made me start to investigate power management issues more closely. Under typical workload, with wireless on, backlight set to 3/8, it used to eat around 0.8-0.9% of battery capacity level per minute, which counts into merely 110-120 minutes (~2h) of total life. That’s damn far from up to 5 hours, isn’t it? However, I’ve been able to get down to ~0.7% / min and ~2h30m after switching wireless off, enabling Laptop Mode, and locking CPUs down to 1 GHz. However, still far from ideal, so I’ve decided to get battery replacement from Dell.

BTW, initially I thought desktop-effects are having much impact on battery, however my test showed I was wrong. Relation between battery life and desktop-effects was marginal.

Machine: Dell Latitude D620 battery

Battery: 6-cell ‘new’ - designed capacity: 56W; current capacity: ~96%

The reason why new battery has already 4% degradation of capacity is probably because I’ve screwed up its very first charge, by unplugging AC adapter before it has been totally charged. Anyway, first test showed that new battery is far better than the old one. Even with wireless switched on and connected, LM enabled, backlight 3/8 I’m getting around ~0.6% / min, which is great improvement comparing with ‘old’ battery. However, to be honest, it’s still a little bit below expected at least 3 hours of work away from AC adapter.

I recently made a fairly significant addition to my digital camera kit - a Canon EOS 5D. Ever since I’d tested the camera for a few weeks last year I had been dreaming of getting one of my own (and saving my pennies) so when I had enough money saved up I grabbed one.

Also rounding out the purchase was a new Flash and a Battery Grip.

While I thought long and hard about buying the camera body and the new flash the Battery Grip was something of an impulse buy. I’d previously always invested any spare money into new lenses and hadn’t thought about a battery grip - but there was an option to throw in the grip (and an extra battery) for only a little extra and so I decided to give it a go - thinking that I’d probably only use it if photographing an event like a wedding.

Having had the new camera, flash and grip for a six weeks not I can honestly say that I’m extremely pleased with each of the purchases. The 5D is a dream to use. My only complaint is the slower frame rate in burst mode. I’m also loving the ability to go extra wide with my 17-40mm lens now that I have a full frame camera. I’m also starting to wonder if I should buy a lens with a longer range than 200mm (as it has less impact on the full frame sensor than it had on my old 20D). I’m also loving the flash - it’s producing some great results and now I have the ability to set it up in a slave setup with my old flash I’ve been experimenting with some interesting lighting for portraits.

So the 5D and EOS 300D battery grip the new flash are great - but what has surprised me most is that I am really loving the battery grip. In fact instead of just attaching it to my camera for special events, I’m finding that I’m using it all the time.

My wife thinks I do it because it makes my camera bigger (and boys like to have big things - hmmm…. that didn’t quite come out right) and that I’m just showing off. Perhaps she’s got something there, it does make the camera look more professional - however I there’s a few other reasons that I love my new BG-E2N battery grip:

1. More Power - two batteries instead of one means recharging half as much. I find that Canon DSLRs have pretty good battery life at the best of times but after a couple of weeks of medium use-age shooting with the 5D I realized that I’d not had to recharge once (a new record for me). It was also great when shooting my son’s birthday party last week. No hunting for and changing batteries at key moments!

2. Second Shutter Release Button - I knew the Canon BG-E3 battery grip had a second shutter button and setting dial but didn’t realize how much I’d use it in my photography when shooting in portrait mode. It’s not that I ever found shooting in portrait mode difficult before - but this is so much easier (or am I just imagining things?)

3. Weight and Balance - two batteries weigh more than one and the grip itself adds a little weight and size to the camera. While this could be seen as a disadvantage (and I’m sure it would be in some circumstances) I really love it. I feel like the camera is sitting well in my hand and that I’m somehow more solid when taking shots. I’ve read people argue about battery grips helping combat camera shake and previously didn’t see how something heavier in a hand would help - but again I ‘feel’ like there might be some truth to the argument.

The only real downside of the BG-E5 battery grip is that while the extra weight and size feels good, it could get a little tiring - quite literally. I did shoot with my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens for a few hours last week. It’s not a light lens and with the extra weight of the 5D (as compared to the smaller and lighter 20D) plus the weight and size of the battery grip I did feel like I was lugging around something pretty significant.

Tips for conserving battery power on notebook PCs

You can manually change the power consumption of your notebook PC and conserve HP 510 battery power.

Battery care practices

HP 530 Battery cells suffer gradual, irreversible capacity loss over time. Such aging occurs more rapidly as temperature and discharge loads increase. Here are some suggested ways to minimize the capacity loss for your battery.

  • Store Li-Ion batteries between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F) with 30% to 50% charge.
  • Do not leave batteries exposed to high temperatures for extended periods. Prolonged exposure to heat (for example, inside a hot car) will accelerate the deterioration of Li-Ion cells.
  • Remove the battery if the notebook will be stored (turned off and not plugged into AC power) for more than 2 weeks.
  • Remove the Pavilion DV2000 battery if the notebook will be plugged into AC power continuously (via a wall adapter or docking station) for more than 2 weeks.

Note: Recommendations for battery use and storage are covered in the HP User Guides for each model.

Calibrate the notebook PC battery

Short discharges and recharges do not fully synchronize the battery’s fuel gauge with the battery’s state-of-charge. This can result in the amount of power available in one cycle being less than expected or the laptop battery meter being inaccurate.

Under normal usage, batteries should be calibrated a minimum of once every 3 months. Your battery can be calibrated by following these steps:

Step 1 - Disable the Windows Power Management

    r scheme, select Never in each of the drop down menus.

  • Click OK on the Power Options P
  • In Windows, right-click the Desktop and select Properties in the menu list.
  • Click the Screen Saver tab and then click the Pavilion DV5 battery Power button.
  • Under Power schemes, select Always On in the drop down menu.
  • Under Settings for Always On poweroperties window and then click OK on the Display Properties window.

Step 2 - Fully charge the battery

  • Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
  • Charge the battery until the Windows battery meter is at 100%.

Step 3 - Fully discharge the battery

  • Remove the AC adapter.
  • Keep the notebook on until the HP 2133 battery has completely drained and the notebook automatically turns off.
  • Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
  • Keep the AC adapter connected to the notebook until the battery has completely charged.

Step 4 - Enable the Windows Power Management

  • In Windows, right-click the Desktop and select Properties in the menu list.
  • Click the Screen Saver tab and then click the Power button.

Under Power schemes, select Portable/Laptop in the drop down menu.

Click OK on the Power Options Properties window and then click OK on the Display Properties window.

Note: After completing the steps above, your notebook PC battery will be calibrated.
